Douglas Chang ’81
Douglas Chang ’81 passed away on March 23 after a three-year battle with cancer. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Doug went to the University of Kansas School of Medicine after Dartmouth and did his medical residency at the Phoenix (Arizona) Good Samaritan Hospital and his renal fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. In 1991 he returned to Phoenix, became a member of what is now known as the Southwest Kidney Institute and his group’s president until he was no longer able to practice. Named a top doctor in the April 2009 issue of Phoenix magazine, Doug was a dedicated physician, demonstrated great compassion for his patients and was highly respected and well-liked by his colleagues, staff, nurses and patients; he was also a fine and good-humored host, opening his Wichita, Kansas, home to three vagabond travelers and classmates the summer after graduation. During Doug’s spare time he enjoyed skiing, biking, golf and fishing and was extremely proud of his daughter Jackie, an outstanding golfer and tennis player who will attend the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, on a golf scholarship. In addition to Jackie, Doug is survived by his wife, Anita; parents Dr. and Mrs. Frederic Chang; siblings Jay, JoAnn, Linda and Karin; one nephew and three nieces; and dog Jax. To honor Doug, donations may be made in his name to the Arizona Kidney Foundation, 4203 E. Indian School Road, Suite 140, Phoenix, AZ 85108.
