Donald R. Miller ’57
Donald R. Miller ’57 died at his home in Lake Worth, Florida, on August 19, 2010. Don came to Dartmouth from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and while in Hanover was an economics major, a member of Zeta Psi and the sophomore orientation committee, and participated in football, rugby and wrestling. Don was employed by J&L Steel in Pittsburgh for most of his career. He was transferred to Cleveland, Ohio, after LTV Steel took over, and worked there until retiring in 1997. For most of this time he worked in the purchasing department. At about the time he started with J&L Steel he formed a real estate partnership with a friend and bought and reworked properties into apartments. He was too much of a nice guy to make much money landlording, but he gained many wonderful friends. Don loved to read and do crossword puzzles, was an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed traveling. Don met his future wife, Adela Shiner, in 1980. They were married in 1989 and moved to Florida in 1998. Adela wrote: “He had many fond memories of Dartmouth. Several years ago we visited the campus and town and as far as I know this was the only time he’d been back. He was thrilled there was so much that he recognized and as he showed me around he told me many stories about his four years there.” In addition to Adela, Don is survived by brother Thomas, two nieces, one nephew and five cousins who attended Dartmouth.
