Blake Hughes ’36


Blake Hughes ’36 of Charleston, South Carolina, died June 11, 2009. He came to Dartmouth from Bronxville High School in New York State. At Dartmouth he attended Tuck School and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Dartmouth Players, the Dartmouth Forensic Union and the French Club. Graduating summa cum laude, he worked for Edward P. Smith and Co. in New York and then for New York Life Insurance. In October 1940 he joined the Navy, earning a commendation from the Secretary of the Navy and the Russian Order of the Fatherland War and leaving active duty with the rank of lieutenant commander. After the war he became promotion manager for McGraw-Hill Publications and in 1951 marketing director for Architectural Record, a publication of F. W. Dodge Corp. He later became publisher of Architectural Record, Housing Magazines and House and Home. He retired in 1980. He is survived by his wife, Betty, their children Diane and Brian, Tu’82, and six grandchildren.
