Albert Coons Jr. ’43


Albert Coons Jr. ’43 died August 31, 2010, in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania. At Dartmouth Al won his “D” in soccer, was a member of the Glee Club, worked for The Daily Dartmouth and majored in English. He attended Tuck for one year. During WW II Al served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic-Pacific theater, earning a red ribbon with three stars, a Philippine Liberation ribbon with two stars and a Unit Citation with two stars. He enlisted as a private and was discharged as a first lieutenant in November 1945. For a few years after the war Al was a newspaper reporter and then he joined Pomeroy’s Inc., a unit of Allied Stores Corp. In 1946 he married Louise Lyons. They lived in Reading, Pennsylvania, while Al was vice president and merchandise manager. When Allied Stores acquired Pomeroy’s Reading and Easton units, Al and his family moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where Al continued as vice president and also became director of stores. Al was a former director of many Harrisburg organizations, including Family and Children Services, the Boys Club, the chamber of commerce and the symphony orchestra. He was also active with Kiwanis and the United Fund as well as the West Shore Country Club. Whenever possible he enjoyed tennis, sailing, golf and skiing. Al was president of the local Dartmouth club in the early 1960 and a class agent from 1961 to 1969 and in 1984. Al is survived by Louise and their children Albert, John and Helen and their families.
