William Edward Murane ’54

William Edward Murane ’54 passed away on October 27, 2018, at home in Denver. Bill came to Dartmouth from Casper, Wyoming, where he attended Natoma County High School. At Dartmouth he was a government major, a brother of Phi Sigma Kappa, rowed on the crew team, played the trombone in the Barbary Coast Band, and served on the Interfraternity Council. After graduation he attended and graduated from Stanford Law School. Bill then served three years in the U.S. Air Force as an officer in the judge advocates division. Upon discharge he joined the Denver Law firm Holland & Hart. From 1969 to 1971 he went to Washington, D.C., first serving as deputy general counsel in the U.S. Commerce Department and then from 1971 to 1972 as general counsel to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Bill then returned to Holland & Hart where he practiced for 50 years, specializing in large case civil litigation. He was elected to the American College of Trial Lawyers, served as chair of the administrative law section of the American Bar Association, and was a member of its governing house of delegates. In 2010 Bill went to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as a volunteer to represent Algerian detainees. For this the ACLU Foundation of Colorado honored him. Just prior to his passing Bill was awarded the Class of 1954 Award for his service to country, career, community, and Dartmouth. His wife, Rosemarie, and sons Peter ’87, Edward, and Alexander survive Bill.
