Robert Joseph Fieldsteel ’43

Robert Joseph Fieldsteel ’43 died September 25, 2016. At Dartmouth Bob was an English honors major, a member of the Interdormitory Council and on the staffs of The Dartmouth and Jack-O-Lantern. In his senior year he met Joyce Wilner, a Smith College freshman, and they were married in 1945.During WW II Bob was a decorated master sergeant in the U.S. Army Combat Infantry, serving from Normandy to within 40 miles of Berlin, including France, Bastogne, Holland and the Ruhr. On his return home in 1945, Bob and his new bride came to Hanover for two years while Bob earned an M.B.A. with high honors from Tuck School.After several years working for a large New York department store, Bob joined the family cotton textile business, Henry Glass & Co. To quote Bob, “It was small enough to allow for complete involvement and large enough to be both national and international.” He became president in 1963, later chairman, revitalizing the company and ushering it into the computer age as early as 1961. Bob sold the company in 1995. Bob and Joyce lived in Port Washington, New York, for 49 years and were very involved in the community, particularly with the development of the Port Washington Public Library, which in 2003 gave them a joint award for their service. In 2006 Bob and Joyce became residents of Kendal at Hanover, a retirement community.Joyce died in 2013. Bob is survived by son John and wife Maggie, son Rob and wife Jan, three granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
