Robert Andrew Martin ’54

Robert Andrew Martin ’54 passed away on November 22, 2017, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Bob came to Dartmouth from Grosse Pointe, where he attended Grosse Pointe High School. At Dartmouth he was an economics major and a brother of Phi Gamma Delta. Bob played the string bass in the Barbary Coast and was a member of the Handel Society and Glee Club. After Dartmouth he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and practiced law with a Grand Rapids, Michigan, law firm from 1957 to 1961, when he joined the family business, F.H. Martin Construction Co. He served as president of the company from 1974 to 1995. Bob was a member of Associated General Contractors, serving as the Detroit chapter president, on the national board and as chairman of the municipal utilities division, executive committee member and life director. Bob was honored with the Construction Icon Award from the Detroit chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction in 2003 and was inducted as a Distinguished Constructor to the Michigan Construction Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Lochmoor Club, where he served as president in 1986-87 and the Detroit Athletic Club. Bob is survived by his wife, Betsy, and children Cathy, Peggy, Barbara ’80, Andy and Jim.
