Richard George Franklin ’54

Richard George Franklin ’54 passed away on February 6 in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Dick came to Dartmouth from Tokyo, where his father was serving in General MacArthur’s administration during the occupation of Japan. He attended Tokyo American High School. At Dartmouth be was a psychology major, a brother of Phi Kappa Psi and a member of the Air Force ROTC. After graduation Dick was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force and reported to Lakeland Air Force Base, thereafter serving in London and the Far East. He was discharged as a captain. Dick then entered the world of advertising, working for a string of advertising agencies, including Curtis Publications, RCA Records and Cowles Publishing. In the 1970s he worked at McGraw-Hill as head of direct marketing. In the 1980s he headed the marketing divisions of such printing firms as Thompson Printing and from the early 1990s to 2001 he worked as an editor at The Wall Street Transcript. After retirement he had his own business, Franklin Direct Response. Dick, known to some as “Cat,” is survived by his wife, Gloria, daughter Kristen and sons Jonathan and Matthew.
