Peter Eberth Bullis ’54
Peter Eberth Bullis ’54 passed away on September 4, 2018. Peter came to Dartmouth from New Haven, Connecticut, where he attended Hillhouse High School. At Dartmouth he majored in architecture and was a brother of Theta Delta Chi. During the summer after his sophomore year he traveled to New Orleans, where he was introduced to and fell in love with traditional New Orleans jazz. He taught himself the banjo and joined the College jazz band, The Indian Chiefs. The band performed at Carnegie Hall and on The Tonight Show with Steve Allen. This was the beginning of a lifelong passion for music. In 1971 Peter began a 45-year partnership with the New Black Eagle Jazz Band as its banjo player and manager. The band released more than 40 recordings and videos and earned a Grammy nomination. After Dartmouth Peter attended the Graduate School of Design at Harvard, earning an M.Arch. in 1958. He then attended the Rhenische Westfalische Technishe Hochschule I Aachen on a Fulbright for the study of contemporary church architecture. He became a registered architect in 1964. As an architect, Peter worked on a variety of buildings in the Boston area with several firms including his own, Finegold and Bullis. He specialized in preservation by creating new uses for old buildings along with residential and commercial design. Peter is survived by his wife, Patricia, and children Pamela, Peter, Penelope, Eliza, Joseph, and Stephan.
