Robert Stewart ’59

Robert Stewart ’59 died on November 20, 2015. He entered Dartmouth from Stuyvesant High School in New York City and was known, while at the College, as Robert Sussman. Robert majored in English and worked for The Dartmouth for four years, serving as managing editor during his senior year. He was a senior fellow, member of Phi Beta Kappa and one of the 11 members of the class of 1959 who received his bachelor’s summa cum laude. Following graduation from Dartmouth he earned a master’s in English from St. John’s College of Oxford University. Robert had a distinguished career as an editor at several major publishing houses in New York City, where he worked with many notable authors, including Germaine Greer, Marvin Hamlisch, James Earl Jones, Zbigniew Brzezinski and George Schultz. His last position was at Scribner, where Robert rose to have his own editor’s imprint, a rare honor. His wife, Marguerite, predeceased him. He is survived by sons Robert ’90 and Matthew and brother Alan.
