Ubed Bamahry ’59


Ubed Bamahry ’59 passed away on December 23, 2012, in Jakarta, Indonesia, on the day of his loving late wife’s birthday. He was born in Ambon, Indonesia. Ubed entered Dartmouth from Universitas Airlangga Fakultas Hukum in Surabaya, East Java. He graduated from Dartmouth with a double major in economics and geography. Ubed kneels in the first row close to John Towle ’59 in the Alpha Theta picture in the 1959 Aegis. Ubed was a loyal Dartmouth graduate. John remembers Ubed e-mailing him for John’s bank account number so he could send a gift to the Dartmouth College Fund. Ubed’s daughter-in-law Shinta Bamahry says that Ubed had fond memories about Dartmouth and his friends. He often talked to his family, including his grandchildren, for hours about the College. When he took his family to visit Dartmouth several years ago, Shinta felt that she “knew the campus like the palm of her hand.” She added that Ubed was proud to be a Dartmouth alumnus and a member of the class of 1959. After graduation in 1959 Ubed returned to Jakarta and worked at Pertamina (the national oil company) until his retirement in 2003. His last position at the oil company was as the director of pension funds of oil and gas. Ubed earned a doctorate in business from Indonesia University in 1968. His two sons, daughter and six grandchildren survive.
