William Hartwell Perry Jr. ’55

William Hartwell Perry Jr. ’55 died unexpectedly on February 18, 2011, after a visit to England. “Hart” came to Dartmouth from West Newton, Massachusetts. An English major, he participated in freshman and varsity hockey but crew was his favorite. He was named president of the rowing club and varsity lightweight coach. Hart was a member of Theta Delta Chi and Dragon. After graduation he served in the Coast Guard, returning to Dartmouth in administration, but leaving for the Kent School in 1961. At Kent Hart served four decades as a distinguished faculty member and head crew coach. He continued his rowing legacy as executive director of the National Rowing Foundation; in multiple rowing positions, including team manager for the 1976 Olympics; and as the first and only non-English steward of the Henley Royal Regatta. He served Dartmouth as class treasurer and newsletter editor as well as a club president. Hart is survived by his wife, Gillian, three children and two stepchildren. A combined 12 grandchildren also are among Hart’s survivors. A memorial service was held at Kent School Chapel in April.
