Harry James Hofrichter ’65
Harry James Hofrichter ’65 passed away in his home in Adamstown, Maryland, on August 5. Jim came to Dartmouth from Madison, Connecticut. He was treasurer of Tau Epsilon Phi, sang in the Glee Club, and went on to obtain his Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Oregon. He spent his career as a highly respected and published researcher for the National Institutes of Health. He made significant contributions to the understanding of sickle cell disease and the study of protein-folding kinetics. His most recent project was in collaboration with the Gates Foundation seeking affordable gene-based cures for sickle cell. Jim was an avid gardener and landscaper. He took great pride and spent countless hours creating and maintaining his fruit trees, vegetable gardens, and flower beds. He was a longtime resident and contributor to the Green Valley community of Frederick County, Maryland, where he and his wife, Priscilla, made many close and lasting friendships. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed travel and spending time with his family. In the months prior to his death Jim was able to visit with all of his family during vacations to Stowe, Vermont, and Emerald Isle, North Carolina. He was predeceased by Priscilla. He is survived by son Jeff; son Brian and his wife, Laura; grandchildren Rebecca, Alex, and Abigail; great-grandchildren Charlotte and Ethan; sisters Barbara, Judith, and Virginia; and nephew Nathan.
