Maxim Koslow ’65

Maxim Koslow ’65 passed away January 24. He came to Dartmouth from the Bronx and, after graduating Dartmouth, went on to receive his medical training at Howard University College of Medicine. He then interned at Bronx Municipal Hospital, completed his residency at NYU Medical Center and had fellowships at the National Hospital for Nervous Disorders in London, the National Institutes of Health and St. Barnabas Hospital. For more than 30 years Max was the director of neurosurgery at NYU/Bellevue, where he influenced—and saved—many lives. Although he liked to think of himself as a curmudgeon, Max was a loving, kind and dedicated physician, scientist, mentor and above all a wonderful friend, brother, cousin, uncle and cherished husband. Max retired in 2011 and was able to devote more attention to jazz as an enthusiastic fan and producer. A New York Times article noted, “He sat in his usual Thursday-night seat a few feet from the stage, waiting for a buddy to arrive,” speaking of Max Roach’s use of rhythms and polyrhythms and slowly sipping from a glass of cognac. He produced a jazz album with two noted musicians, Andrew Cyrille and Bill McHenry. He was very proud of the excellent reviews. Friends at Sunnyside Records said, “The staff of Sunnyside and the N.Y.C. jazz community lost a great friend. We grew to love conversing with him as an exuberant jazz fan and brilliant individual. His enthusiasm was contagious and generosity unbounded. We’re so sorry to see him go.”
