Maurice Gray Wilkins Jr. ’54

Maurice Gray Wilkins Jr. ’54 passed away on October 25, 2018. He came to Dartmouth from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he attended Oak Ridge High School. At Dartmouth Wil was biology major, a brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and a member of Navy ROTC. After graduation he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an aviator, reaching the rank of captain. In 1958 he joined the Mechanics National Bank in Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1969 he joined the Paul Revere Life Insurance Co. in Greenwich, Connecticut, serving in various positions including vice president of investments. In 1974 he moved to Rhode Island, where he joined Textron as vice president and corporate treasurer until 1985, when he became group vice president. In1990 he became executive vice president, serving until his retirement in 1993. Wil held directorships in Providence’s Citizen Bank and Thompson Steel Co. and he was a member of the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council. After retirement he spent half his time in the Florida Keys, where he became a licensed fishing guide. Wil is survived by his wife, Zelda, and children Laurie and Andrew.
