John Parker ’54

John Parker ’54 passed away on October 6, 2016, in Brunswick, Maine. John came to Dartmouth from Bath, Maine. He graduated from Morse High School and Phillips Exeter Academy. At Dartmouth he was a history major and a brother of Sigma Chi. He was a member of Sphinx and lettered in baseball and basketball. After graduation he spent two years in the U.S. Army, including one year in Germany. After service he received his M.B.A. from Columbia University in 1958. John then joined Nichols Inc., a company in the poultry industry. In 1964 he went to work for the Bath Iron Works, a shipbuilding company, as comptroller, a position he held until 1977, when he purchased Maine Surgical Supply Co. with his brother. They then bought Lopez and Church, an office supply company in Portland, Maine. John then returned to Bath Iron Works as vice president of management information systems, retiring in 1994. Since retirement he was involved in community affairs, establishing a community free health clinic for those of limited means, serving on the board of a nonprofit light assembly and packaging company that employs ex-convicts and drug addicts who are unable to work in a structured environment. John is survived by his wife, Judy, and children John, Bill, Susan and Sarah.
