Jere Daniell ’55

Jere Daniell ’55 died on May 17 at his home in Hanover. He is survived by his wife, Elena, and children Matthew, Alexander, Clifford, Breena, and Douglas. After graduating from high school in Millinocket, Maine, Jere spent a year in Phillips Exeter Academy before joining the class of 1955. He majored in modern government and became a member of Green Key, Casque & Gauntlet, Alpha Theta, and Navy ROTC. Jere was the class valedictorian. He completed his service in the Navy as a lieutenant, j.g., in the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Focusing on colonial New England, Jere earned a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University in 1964. Jere started his career at Dartmouth as an assistant professor of history in 1964. He became a full professor in 1974 and served as department chairman from 1979 to 1983.
