Gerald Henry Smith Jr. ’54

Gerald Henry Smith Jr. ’54 passed away on January 11 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Jerry came to Dartmouth from Lyndonville, Vermont, where he attended Lyndon Institute. At Dartmouth he was an economics major and a member of the Navy ROTC. After graduation he served in the U.S. Navy for three years, serving in the North Pacific aboard the USS Calcaterra. He was discharged as a lieutenant, j.g. Jerry received his M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh and then worked for U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh. In 1966 he moved to Chicago as director of personnel for Turner Mfg. Co. In 1968 Jerry left Turner and joined A.T. Kearney management consultants. In 1972 he bought Prairie du Chen Marina in Wisconsin, where he developed a thriving houseboat rental business. In 1980 he rejoined A.T. Kearney. In 1988 he joined Planmetrics, consultants to the utility industry, where he served as vice president, chief operating officer, president, CEO and chairman. In 1996 Planmetrics was sold to Computer Sciences, where he served as vice president. Jerry retired in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and sons Craig and Scott.
