Class Note 1980

Issue

May-June 2022

As life slowly returns to normal or the new normal, I reflect on how tricky it can be to get out of the Covid rut and reconnect with the world. For me, the Covid years meant working out in my home gym and walking outdoors for exercise, doing a lot of home cooking and takeout, and streaming movies on TV and my laptop. In the last few months I have taken great delight in eating out, going to the gym, and seeing movies on the big screen—not to mention the occasional hug. (Now if only I can master conversations longer than 15 minutes!)

I’m sorry to report that Will Hale passed away in November of 2021. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kim (Rohrer) Hale, of Oxford, Michigan; daughter Olivia of San Francisco; mother Elizabeth Hale of Minnetonka, Minnesota; sister Heather Warm of San Francisco, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Will spent his childhood in southern California till age 11, when the family moved to Panama City Zone. While in high school there he started his own horse and rider photography. After earning his B.A. in engineering at Dartmouth Will worked on Wall Street and in London as a convertible bond trader for several years. He completed his master’s in engineering at Dartmouth in 1992 and eventually went on to earn a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the University of Minnesota. He and Kim moved in 1995 to Oxford, where he was employed as a powertrain industrial engineering specialist at Stellantis in nearby Auburn Hills until the time of his death.

His passions included music, trap and skeet shooting, and deep-sea fishing in Mexico and Central America, catching sail fish, marlin, dorado, and tuna. He also bought, refurbished, and resold solid silver flutes and piccolos.

It’s a great testament to the Dartmouth experience that so many graduates’ offspring wind up attending. Steve Muenzen ’14, the son of Chuck Muenzen, married Renee Lai ’14, whom he met his senior year, at the Barr Mansion in Austin, Texas, December 20, 2021. Steve works for the University of Texas investment management company helping to grow its endowment, and Renee is a professional studio artist painter and college art instructor. Chuck reports that many of the class of 2014 were in attendance, as were three of his good friends, Phil Gibbs ’81, Peter Maginot, and John Wilen. “It was a beautiful afternoon and evening sandwiched between rainy days before and after and was in the sweet spot between delta and omicron, so all stayed healthy and the travels were smooth,” he writes.

I’m excited to announce that our class is planning a mini-reunion October 9-12 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For more details, visit the class of 1980 website.
