Class Note 1980
Son, can you play me a memory? I’m not really sure how it goes, but it’s sad and it’s sweet and I knew it complete when I wore a younger man’s clothes. Stephen Kim, Joel Getzendanner, and Steve Rutan met together last November at Stephen’s home in Carmel, California. Reuniting their band for the first time in more than a decade, the three performed cool sounds predating 1980 for the listening pleasure of the Kims’ family and friends. By the end of their set, the band was tired and their eyes were growing old, but their blood ran through their instruments and their songs were in their souls.
Armed with a Harvard M.B.A., Stephen works as a private investor and consultant. Joel, with an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, is a deputy assistant commissioner in the employment security department’s workforce initiatives unit in the State of Washington. Steve, credentialed with an M.B.A. from Tuck, is president of Rutan Management Consulting in Rochester, New York. All three business gurus know the difference between a professional musician and a large pizza. A large pizza can feed a family of four.
When I think of music at Dartmouth, I remember the Aires. Singer Steve Taft has more than 37 years as a Merrill Lynch financial advisor and is based in Bethesda, Maryland. A member of both the Massachusetts and New Hampshire bars, Dana Cetlin is a real estate lawyer in Natick, Massachusetts.
Scott Jardin, a nurse educator, still enjoys performing. You can find his albums, Nothing is Exempt and Round the World, wherever music is available online. The Amazon review notes that Scott “toured as a member of Dartmouth Aires, an a cappella group, and that’s some indication of Jardin’s eminently likable singing voice.”
Joseph Hunter owns a construction firm in Seattle. Joe married classmate Anne Van Roden. Anne is a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in working with the gifted and twice-exceptional individuals and families. Anne earned a master’s of science in marriage and family therapy from Seattle Pacific University in 2001 and developed Seattle Relationship Therapy since.
Kris Treu is a founder of the law firm, Moscarino & Treu, located in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Outside the office, Kris enjoys performing with various musical groups, most notably, The No Name Band, a group of Cleveland lawyers who perform music of the 1960s, 1970s, and beyond for charitable events in northeast Ohio. You can also find Kris on YouTube performing the original song, “Treads.” Everybody knows Kris is married to Nancy Jepson Treu of Caribou, Maine. Also a lawyer, Nancy is drum major for a large and talented family of second-generation Treus.
Tom Bartlett is said to be in England. He is also reported to be an Elvis impersonator. I think the former is more true than the latter.
Come down from your fences. Open the gate. It may be raining, but there’s a rainbow above you. You better let somebody love you, before it’s too late.
