Class Note 1950

Issue

January-February 2025

Our mini went without a hitch with supper at the Hanover Inn Pine Room (arranged by Joel Leavitt) on Friday with “Rusty” Rodriguez, Stephanie “Toots” Reinenger, Doug and Meredith Smith, Bob Kirby and Brownlea McKee, Joel Leavitt, and my oldest daughter Rebecca and me. Saturday saw Bob and Brownlee, Joel, Victoria Hicks (daughter of my best lifelong pal Ort ’49) her beau Gerard, and Becky and me at a wonderful game in which the Greens prevailed over Penn (to be followed by wins over Yale with a come-from-behind 44-43). The Big Green undefeated (as I write this before Homecoming) and leading the Ivy pack—wow! The class of ’50 made a statement at the Penn game with lots of singing and banjo madness. The weekend was capped with a great supper at Jesse’s with the Smiths, Kirby and McKee, Joel, and Becky and me. On Saturday night we closed out the mini in great shape. Ray “Moe” Devoe reveled in an Air Force exceptional service award (where he served from 1977 to 2011 as a distinguished counselor).

Picked up at a recent “Thrive” series: Bill Carpenter reports his sister and son from New Zealand headed for North Carolina but Helene intervened and further travel was limited. They spent time viewing old pictures and later tripped to British Columbia. A sad call from Joel saying Tony Gilroy called to say Frank Gilroy’s wife, Ruth, had passed away. The athletic fund market value of the class of 1950 was $24,126.64 on June 30, 2023. Jill Harned reports her last grandson is applying to Dartmouth. She says he’s “smart as a whip.” John Caldwell bought a condo at The Greens in Hanover and is needing a walker (aren’t we all?) but is starting another book! Meredith Smith was honored by her town of Enfield, New Hampshire, where, as founder of Enfield Heritage Commission (10 years) and six years as selectman, she was instrumental in the fundraising and dedication of Mascoma Park.

I sadly list classmates who have passed on: Bob Farrell, Donald Hall, George Woodwell, Mal Hill, Jack Elliot, and Merritt Osborne.
