Xavier Alexander Engle ’09

Xavier Alexander Engle ’09 died in a kayaking accident in Washington State on November 30, 2014. He was born July 27, 1987, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and came to Dartmouth from Anchorage West High School in Anchorage, Alaska. At the College he majored in cellular biochemistry and in 2007 studied abroad at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he received the Rick Angulo World Experience Award. A passionate and world-class kayaker, he was a member of the Ledyard Canoe Club and kayaked throughout North and South America, Africa, Siberia and New Zealand. Xavier authored several published scientific papers, volunteered at the Children’s Surgical Centre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, worked with immigrants at the Terry Reilly Health Services in Boise, Idaho, and was a public health volunteer in Uganda. He was a third-year student at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle and had been accepted into the global master’s of public health program. Xavier is survived by his life partner, Kaitlyn, mother Pamela, half-brother Caio and biological parents Kirk and Afra. Thoughts and memories can be shared at xavierengle.tumblr.com.
